I just finished a bottle of my favorite Belgian beer, so I figured this would be the perfect time to start writing a post. I really didn’t have a topic of any kind planned out, but once again I’ve found inspiration by simply starting to type.

If you knew me a few years ago, you might wonder at the fact that I was drinking any alcoholic beverage. Oddly enough, I’ve even become a bit of a connoisseur as far as beer goes. Growing up, I had always had a fear of alcohol. Not caution, not wariness, just fear. It was wrong and led to horrible things and that’s how you end up in an “after school special” kind of scenario. Then when I was 17 my dad died due to drinking himself to death. That really didn’t help my fear of said beverages. Some years later when I was well above the legal age I decided to get over my fear and try some stuff. I immediately came to the conclusion that I didn’t like the taste of alcohol. The thing about that is when you tell your friends that you don’t really like stuff or it’s the first time you’re trying something, they start you out with the lighter stuff. Turns out that lighter beers taste really sharp, like an attack on the front of your tongue. I thought I didn’t like beer, but I just don’t like “light” anything. One of my friends finally put a dark Belgian beer in my hand and it completely opened my eyes. It had so much flavor and tasted like nothing else I’d had before.

So the lesson here for me was that while there are many good reasons to not try something, fear is never a good one.
